Hosting a Sustainable Packaging and Waste Workshop
BEACON, in conjunction with Cywain (Menter a Busnes), hosted a very successful workshop on Sustainable Packaging and Waste at Tŷ Menai, Parc Menai, Bangor on Tuesday 29th January. The workshop was aimed at the Welsh food and drink industry to inform delegates of the latest developments and technologies in biorefining that can support the move away from single-use plastics in packaging and find alternative, more sustainable, solutions, and also demonstrate the potential to generate additional revenue through the valorisation of waste streams.
Following a welcome address from Nerys Davies of Cywain, Dr Rob Elias and Selwyn Owen showcased the work being done by BEACON in the field of waste valorisation and biopolymers for sustainable packaging, with examples from some the recent projects undertaken. Other presenters included Hugh Jones from WRAP Cymru, David Walker from Business Wales, Dewi Rowlands from Bangor University who spoke about product design, and Wyn Griffiths who introduced the audience to fabLAB at Pontio, which offers access to digital manufacturing and prototyping equipment in the laboratories there. Jane Lambert delivered the final presentation with a talk on Intellectual Property Rights. Lunch and an opportunity to network with fellow delegates followed.
Further workshops on the theme of Sustainable Packaging and Waste will be held at Aberystwyth University on 13th March 2019 and Swansea University on 28th March 2019.
